Episode 3: Marina Tsvetaeva
Tsvetaeva wrote in the 20th century, through the Russian Revolution. It’s taken a while for Russian literary scholarship to give her incredible work the respect it deserves…
I like that you are aching not for me,
I like that I am aching not for you,
That the world’s weight won’t ever be
Floating away from underneath us two.
I like how I can laugh – be free
Not play with words; I also like that few
Would waves of crimson blushes see
When I but brush against your sleeve.
I like as well the ease with which you hold
Another woman calmly when I’m here
And you wouldn't wish me into hellish fire sold
When I would kiss another with you near.
My darling name, my darling, isn’t told
In vain at night; nor whispered in my ear.
The church’s silence will stay large and cold
For nobody will sing above us: ‘hallelujah!’
I thank you with my soul- for it is true!-
That without knowing it, I see that you love me
For scarcity of seeing sunsets meant for two,
For the night’s peace you gift each day to me,
For the sun that shines not on us two,
For our never-walking along a moonlit sea
That I – alas – am aching not for you,
That you – alas – are aching not for me.
